DO YOU KNOW WHAT A GUNTER'S OR SURVEYOR'S CHAIN IS?
Perhaps you have heard someone mention the term "chain" in reference to
measuring or surveying land. This common forestry and surveying term refers to
the metal chain that surveyors once carried, which was 66 feet long and
contained 100 links. Although this tool has been largely replaced by
electronic devices such as the total station and by GIS technology, the terms
"chain" and "square chain" are still used in linear and area land measurement.
It should be noted that a Gunter's or surveyor's chain refers both to a
66-foot unit of length and to the actual 66-foot chain itself. In contrast,
the engineer's or Ramsden's chain is 100 feet in length, with 100 1-foot
links, and is used to precisely measure lengths and distances in feet and
decimal fractions of feet. in this case, the term "chain" refers only to the
measurement tool itself and not to any specific unit of length. For more
information, please visit Landterms.com using the links below.

LANDTERMS.COM TERM OF THE WEEK
Every issue we feature a real estate, forestry, natural sciences or other
land-related term from our partner site, Landterms.com. This week's term is:
Board foot: 1. A lumber measurement equal to a board or plank of wood 1 inch
thick, 12 inches long, and 12 inches wide. The formula for calculating board
feet of sawed lumber is bd ft = (thickness (in) x width (in) x length (in)/12.
For example, a board that is 1 inch thick, 12 inches wide, and 10 feet long
contains 10 board feet of lumber ((1x12x10)/12). 2. An estimate of the volume
of lumber in logs or standing timber using a log rule.
