SPECIAL REPORT:
PROTECTING YOUR PROPERTY FROM WILDFIRE
As we begin to enter the wildfire season in many areas of the country, take a
few moments to assess your property's risk.
In many regions of the United States, more and more people are moving away from
cities and choosing to make their homes in rural areas. The wave of
"baby-boomers" who will retire within the next few years is expected to add to
this trend. Rural properties are often located within wildland-urban
interfaces (WUI's), which, as the name suggests, are zones where developed
property abuts natural, undeveloped lands. As those seeking to live closer to
nature develop formerly "wild" lands by building homes and other structures,
the number of WUI's and the land area they occupy will only become larger.
With increasing amounts and sizes of WUI's comes increased risk of wildfire
that threatens both life and property. Although there is nothing that will
completely alleviate the risk of property-destroying fires, there are steps you
can take to ensure that your home and property are as safe as possible. First,
analyze your property's fire risk. You should begin by researching the history
of natural fires in the area. This will provide you with an idea of the
frequency and intensity of such events. Make sure also that firefighting
vehicles have adequate access to your property and that your roads are clearly
marked.
Understanding the relationship between wildfires and precipitation in your area
can provide insight into the degree of risk from year to year. Periods without
adequate precipitation can cause the vegetation that fuels wildfires to dry out
and become more prone to ignition. However, excessive precipitation in the
season (usually winter) preceding the fire season can cause an overgrowth of
vegetation and therefore an increase in the fuel available to burn. Maps and
written descriptions of precipitation and wildfire trends and outlooks for
different areas of the country may be obtained from the National Interagency
Fire Center (http://www.nifc.gov).
Researching historical and current trends is the first step toward creating
"firewise" communities and properties. "Firewise" is a term used by the
National Fire Protection Association (www.firewise.org) to describe areas with
greatly reduced risk of WUI wildfire due to the purposeful actions of humans.
You should also be aware that the term "wildfire" does not refer only to forest
fires. Many other types of wildfires exist, from scrub and brush fires in
Arizona that occur following winters with above-normal precipitation to
fast-moving, extremely hot sawgrass fires in Florida that can actually burn on
top of standing or flowing water.
Agencies that can provide additional information on WUI's, wildfire risk, and
protecting property from wildfire include the Federal Emergency Management
Agency (http://www.fema.gov), the National Wildfire Coordinating Group
(http://www.nwcg.gov), the Bureau of Land Management (http://www.blm.gov), the
USDA Forest Service (http://www.fs.fed.us), and the National Association of
State Foresters (http://www.stateforesters.org).
