This property is located near:
Lake of the Ozarks State Park (approx. 45 miles)
Acquired by the State of Missouri in 1946, this 17,600 acre park in the Osage
River Hills is the state's largest and surrounds the Grand Glaize Arm of the
meandering Lake of the Ozarks. The park features Ozark Caverns, famous for
unusual stalactite formations and waterfalls known as "Angels' Showers", as
well as the Coakley Hollow Fen Natural Area, a protected riparian area with a
swampy spring-fed meadow and a fen (a place where cool, mineral-rich water
seeps to the surface). With two swimming beaches and two marinas, water
recreation is of course quite popular at the park, but visitors can also enjoy
numerous other activities including camping, picnicking, hiking, mountain
biking, and backpacking. Equestrian enthusiasts can take their own horses and
ride trails or pay a visit to the stable where horseback rides are available
for a fee.
Two of the 12 trails in the Lake of the Ozarks State Park are designated for
equestrian use. The 2-mile long Squaw's Revenge Trail loops through forested
hills and bluff tops that provide fabulous views of the lake. The more
challenging Trail of Four Winds takes riders through some of the most scenic
and rugged terrain the park has to offer. This 16.5-mile trail, which connects
with the shorter Squaw's Revenge Trail, features oak and hickory woods, open
grasslands, hardwood bottomlands, and scenic ridge tops with views of the
forested valley and hills below. Park website:

many others. This trail, part of the Florida National Scenic Trail, offers
scenic views and abundant wildlife, especially in fall and winter when birds
such as herons, egrets, and waterfowl are plentiful. Equestrian trail users
can access the trail at various points, including Port Mayaca, Chancy Bay,
Harney Pond, Moore Haven, and Clewiston Park. More information can be found on

This property is located near:
Olympic National Park (approx. 60-100 miles depending on park entrance used)
The scenery of one of America's most spectacular parks ranges from the beaches
of the Pacific Ocean to the tops of glacier-capped peaks, with rain forest
valleys and everything else you might expect in between. Over 95% of the
park's 922,000 acres is designated as wilderness; the National Park Service
claims that Olympic is 'a remnant of wild America' and 'one of the wildest
places left in the Lower Forty-Eight states'. Although equestrian use of many
park trails is permitted, the ecology of Olympic is fragile so certain rules
must be followed, including the use of rolled grain and pellets for
supplemental feed to prevent the introduction of weeds into the wilderness.
Overnight trips require a Wilderness Camping Permit and may also require
reservations depending on where you plan to go. More information is available
on the following web pages:

LANDTERMS.COM TERM OF THE WEEK
http://landterms.com
Each issue we feature a real estate, forestry, natural sciences or other
land-related term from our partner site, Landterms.com.
This week's term: Agricultural protection zoning
Zoning policies intended to protect farmland and farming activities from
incompatible non-farm uses, such as residential and commercial development.
Agricultural protection zoning, also referred to as agricultural zoning, can
specify many factors, such as preferred land use, minimum size of farm or the
number of non-farm or residential dwellings allowed. Agricultural zoning is
usually based on historic land use, soil properties, and location and allows
activities such as orchards, farms, ranching, or timber production.
