SITE NEWS: New Search Engine
At American Eagle Star, we are always looking for ways to improve our web sites
and make them more user-friendly. To this end, we have added a new search
engine to both EagleStar.net and LandTerms.com. This feature is easier to use,
returns more relevant and better-sorted results, and greatly expands the search
capabilities and options on both sites. On Eaglestar.net, the new search
feature can be accessed using the EagleStar Land Search field that appears at
the top of each page. We have also left the previous search function intact in
order to provide a variety of search options and for those that may prefer it.
The two search engines function in different ways, and the old engine may be
useful for certain types of searches, especially the "Search by keyword within
this category" function that appears on each category page. You can access the
previous search option by clicking on the "Search" link that appears on the red
navigation bar at the top of each page.
On Landterms.com, the new search can be accessed by using the "Power Search"
field at the top of each page. We have also added an "Advanced Power Search"
feature that allows users to fine-tune their search queries. The "Advanced
Power Search", as well as the previous search function (now labeled "Optional
Search Form") can both be found by clicking on the "Search" button on the
yellow navigation bar at the top of each page. We are pleased with the
organized, relevant search results returned by our new engine on both sites and
encourage all our site users to try it out - let us know what you think!

OUR NATURAL WORLD: HARVEST MOON AND HUNTER'S MOON
The moon exerts profound influences on the Earth. Some of these are proven
physical processes, while others exist as anciently held beliefs. Worship of
the moon as a powerful and guiding force in the everyday occurrences in one's
life was fairly common in the not-too-distant past. Even as recently as the
late 1800's, planting and harvesting according to lunar phases was a widespread
practice. Since that time, modern developed societies have largely lost their
former lunar connections, due in part to the fact that the moon is no longer
depended upon as a source of light for the completion of certain tasks.
Full moons have held significance for humans since the dawn of man. In North
America, Native Americans used moon phases as a calendar, giving each full moon
a name that generally describes the time of year it occurs. The full moon
names used by the Algonquin tribes of northern and eastern America were adopted
and modified by European settlers, resulting in the traditional North American
list of full moon names. The Harvest Moon and Hunter's Moon, the full moons of
late summer and early autumn, were especially important to people who made
their living from the land.
September's Full Moon: The Harvest Moon
The Harvest Moon is the full moon nearest to the autumnal equinox. The
autumnal equinox, which usually occurs September 23, marks the time when
periods of day and night are equal in length. Following the autumnal equinox,
days grow shorter and nights longer as autumn transitions into winter. The
Harvest Moon usually occurs in September in the Northern Hemisphere, but can
also take place in early October. In 2008, the full Harvest Moon happened on
September 15.
As the moon orbits the earth and passes through its phases, it rises and sets
about 50 minutes later each day, until it reaches the New Moon phase and the
cycle begins anew. Due to the fact that the angle of the moon's orbit relative
to the Earth's evening horizon is at its narrowest, the moon rises only a few
minutes later for several consecutive evenings surrounding the full Harvest
Moon. In the U.S., the moon rises about 30 minutes later on these evenings.
In Canada and Europe, the difference is only about 15 minutes each night.
Orbital angles and positions are also responsible for the fact that a Harvest
Moon also rises much faster than a normal full moon.
The Harvest Moon is historically significant because it coincides with the
harvest time for many crops. Traditionally, it allowed farmers to gather crops
long after sunset because there is little lag time between sunset and moonrise,
and the moon is bright and full. A Harvest Moon may appear reddish when near
the horizon, because it is being seen through more layers of atmospheric
particles than when it is higher in the sky. Harvest Moons may also appear
abnormally large near the horizon, but this is an optical illusion, a trick of
the eye known as a "moon illusion".
October's Full Moon: The Hunter's Moon
The Hunter's Moon is the next full moon following the Harvest Moon. Like the
Harvest Moon, the Hunter's Moon rises full, bright, and fast soon after sunset
for several consecutive days. This moon is traditionally associated with
feasting. The grains, fruits, and vegetables grown all summer had by now been
harvested, and game animals had fed from the land and were now encased in
winter fat. The Hunter's Moon provided the light for nocturnal hunts across
the recently harvested fields which now lay empty and barren, offering little
cover or protection for fox, deer, or other game. After the hunters procured
the winter's meat, a great feast was held to commemorate the season's bounty, a
traditional event for both Native Americans and North American settlers.
Take a moment to step outside and enjoy 2008's Harvest Moon. It rises tomorrow,
October 14, at 4:02 PM (Eastern Daylight Time).
A list of full moons in 2008, their names, dates, and times is on Space.com.

LANDTERMS.COM TERM OF THE WEEK
http://landterms.com
Each issue we feature a real estate, forestry, natural sciences or other
land-related term from our partner site, LandTerms.com.
This week's term: Fannie Mae
What is "Fannie Mae" (FNMA)?
Fannie Mae is the nickname of the Federal National Mortgage Association (FNMA),
a U.S. government-sponsored enterprise (GSE) chartered by Congress to provide
liquidity and stability to U.S. housing and mortgage markets.
What does Fannie Mae do?
Fannie Mae tries to ensure that primary lenders (mortgage companies, banks,
etc.) have the funds necessary to make affordable loans to consumers. Like its
cousin Freddie Mac (FHLMC), Fannie Mae does not make loans directly to home
buyers, dealing instead in the secondary mortgage market. Fannie Mae funds its
mortgage investments primarily by issuing debt securities in the domestic and
international capital markets.
Fannie Mae concentrates its operations in three areas: Single-Family, Housing
and Community Development, and Capital Markets. Fannie Mae's business
activities are aimed at providing services, products, and solutions to its
lending and housing partners. The overall goal of Fannie Mae, and in fact the
mission for which it was chartered, is to increase the total amount of housing
funds available in the U.S., thereby making home ownership and rental housing
more available and affordable.
History of Fannie Mae
Fannie Mae was created in 1938 as a federal agency. Its organizational
structure was changed in 1968 to a private shareholder-owned company. In
reality, Fannie Mae remained a quasi-government agency. When the bubble burst
in the U.S. residential real estate market in 2007-08, many of the questionable
management decisions and accounting practices of Fannie Mae's directors were
exposed. The company began to lose vast amounts of money, and was eventually
taken over by the U.S. government in September 2008, when James Lockhart,
Director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA), appointed his agency as
conservator of Fannie Mae. In addition, the U.S. Department of the Treasury
agreed to provide up to $100 billion of capital as needed to ensure the company
continues to provide liquidity to the housing and mortgage markets. Many
experts claim this figure could be much higher, approaching $200 billion or
more when all is said and done.
