KIDS AND NATURE: Forestry Summer Camp
Are kids becoming disassociated from nature? Are we raising a generation of
children that is increasingly unfamiliar with the great outdoors? A plethora of
recent studies says yes - and with the pervasiveness of computers, cell phones,
video games, and other gadgets and gizmos nowadays, it seems very likely to be
true. With this lack - and in many cases, even an unreasonable fear - of nature
in our children comes a loss of the land ethic which used to be a common thing,
taken for granted, and held dear by nearly everybody in North America, and lots
of other places, too. It is more than a little worrisome that teaching our
children to love the land has slipped so much in importance in our daily lives.
Fortunately for us, there are some programs and activities for kids designed by
people who are trying to effect a change for the better.
One such group of programs are the Environmental Education Programs (EEP)
offered by Northern Arizona University's (NAU) Centennial Forest, featuring
overnight summer camp programs for kids 9-16 years old. The Centennial Forest
is the research and teaching forest of NAU's School of Forestry and is located
a few miles from NAU's Flagstaff, Arizona campus. At an elevation of 7,000
feet, the Centennial Forest lies in the heart of the world's largest contiguous
ponderosa pine forest and is home to the Field Campus, where campers stay,
play, and learn during their week-long sessions.
The EEP programs, which are self-supporting and entirely non-profit, begin with
the Junior Forester Academy (JFA), which offers a hands-on introduction to the
world of forestry and environmental science. The goal of JFA is to connect
youth to the outdoors so that they can learn and teach others about
environmental stewardship, land ethics, and forest health. The stated goal of
JFA is to "have fun while exploring the forest". Activities include learning
how to observe and measure the forest, how to use a map and compass,
identification of native and exotic plants, craft projects like making walking
sticks, and the Logger Olympics at the end of the week. Like all the summer EEP
programs, JFA is a 5-day session (Monday morning through Friday afternoon),
with healthy meals and snacks provided (and occasional s'mores if there are no
restriction on campfires).
The second step in the EEP's summer camp programs is the Senior Forester
Academy (SFA), where new or returning campers build on their previous forest
and land knowledge and learn how to see the forest through the eyes of a forest
scientist. SFA campers learn about more advanced topics like biodiversity, how
plants and animals influence forest health, and how to develop a scientific
hypothesis. SFA includes a trip to NAU's ropes course, where campers learn how
to use teamwork to conquer challenges, and a hiking trip to West Clear Creek,
where campers learn about critical riparian habitat - and take a swim in the
cool creek.
The Outdoor Leadership Academy (OLA) is the third step in the EEP's summer camp
programs. Its focus is to have fun while developing leadership skills and
confidence in the outdoors. Campers learn good decision-making skills, hiking
etiquette, outdoor cooking, predicting weather, outdoor survival, as well as
learning about different environmental, land management, or outdoor career
fields. OLA also takes a trip to West Clear Creek, with the week culminating in
an adventure race through the forest where campers use the techniques they have
learned during the week.
The cost to attend each session is $650. Scholarships are available. These
summer camp programs are non-profit and self-supporting, and gladly accept
donations. Since their inception, the EEP programs have helped hundreds of kids
become more aware of and attached to nature and the outdoors, many of them
urban kids who would otherwise not have had this chance. If you have the means,
consider sponsoring a full or partial scholarship - every dollar donated
equates to more kids served, and more children that are learning to care about
the land.
This year, there are 2 sessions of JFA: June 8-12 and 15-19. SFA is June 22-26,
and OLA is June 29 - July 3. The staff reports that camp is filling up fast
this year, with over half of the available spots for campers already taken.
Don't wait to fill out an application or your child might miss out. Camp and
scholarship applications are available online.

LANDTERMS.COM TERM OF THE WEEK
http://landterms.com
Each issue we feature a real estate, forestry, natural sciences or other
land-related term from our partner site, LandTerms.com.
This week's term: Subinfeudation
The process of granting subordinate tenancies that characterized feudal land
tenure. The king or other sovereign would grant title to land to
tenants-in-chief in return for certain services, who would in turn grant title
to lesser tenants in return for services, and so on. Each tenancy thus created
was subordinate to the one that preceded it, and title to land was not held
absolutely, but rather "of" another.
See also "Substitution".
