IMPROVING DEER HABITAT THROUGH FOREST REGENERATION
Part 4: Follow-Up and Maintenance
by Steve Chilcote
Editor's note: This is a 4-part series of articles in which forester Steve
Chilcote outlines tried and true methods of treating forested land to produce
high-quality habitat for deer and other wildlife. In the final installment,
Steve discusses the maintenance and follow-up treatments that are necessary
following the initial tree harvest. You can read the other articles in this
series at http://www.eaglestar.net/newsletter
Stumps and Sprouts
Poor or no follow-up treatments and maintenance are the reasons for failure of
this program. Tend to your timber stands as you would a garden. I always do
touch-up treatments on fenced stands to take out undesirable trees that
sprouted and left-over fern patches.
Red maple, black gum, beech, striped maple and other undesirable trees grow
fast from stump sprouts. If there are too many, you should cut them off again
with a chainsaw and treat them with herbicide. For trees with timber value,
leave the main leader for future timber but cut the lesser sprouts. After you
take down the fence, cut them again. They will sprout again and provide
excellent browse. Once your stand has good regeneration on the forest floor
(consisting of new oak trees and other valuable timber species, brush and
planted trees) and the planted trees are above browse height, take the fence
down. Continue tending your new forest with the chainsaw and herbicides to
concentrate growth on the desirable plants.
Weeks of Pain, Years of Pleasure
If this sounds like a lot of work and sacrifice, that’s because it is. You must
take the land out of circulation for a few years – probably four or more years
until you can take down the fence. But once you have this new forest
established, with thick cover, browse and fruit, it will be the favorite
hangout of the local deer population. Remember the 14 deer that were feeding in
the regeneration area with the broken fence? Bucks will make the stand part of
their core area and bucks that live on other properties that expand their range
during the rut will certainly cruise the edge of this deer paradise to check
for estrus does.
Now, here’s how to ease the pain of losing this acreage. When you fence the
area, install a good food plot outside the fence and adjacent to it. You can
also plant forage on the disturbed soil around the outside of the fence. Have
the fence installer make a good wide maintenance trail around the fence and
plant it with forage. A mile of trail around a fence is an acre of ground. The
log landing should be located such that it will become your food plot.
Next, place your stand 30 yards from the fences. Deer will parade past your
stand as they work their way along the fence to get to the food plot. I have
one such spot where a long fenced area ends. Deer like to bed in the mountain
laurel on the ridge above. Every evening, deer come out of the laurel and
around the end of the fence and on down the mountain. I save that spot for when
things are slow and I want to see some deer.
If your property is large enough, you may want to treat this regeneration area
as a sanctuary. Keeping deer on your property by providing an undisturbed area
is an important part of QDM strategy. Older age class deer will seek out these
areas and hole up there once they realize they won’t get shot at or driven from
their beds.
Whether you own a large tract of land or a small woodlot, proper forest
regeneration coupled with food plot development will greatly enhance the
wildlife habitat on your property. A few seasons of work will produce big
dividends for decades to come.
