SPECIAL REPORT: LEARN, DON'T BURN
This Season's Wildfire Risk Assessment for Your Neck of the Woods
Wildfire season is upon us, a time of heightened awareness and increased
tension, especially for those who reside in areas where the town or city meets
the woods - the wildland-urban interface. The number of folks who live in WUI's
has increased dramatically over the last 10 or 15 years, and this trend shows
no signs of abating. A wildfire acts as a natural cleansing and rejuvenating
agent in forests and grasslands - but not in your home. Spending a few moments
educating oneself and taking some precautionary measures can translate into
saving your home and property - and possibly even your life.
Each year, the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) releases a Fire Season
Outlook report for each region of the United States. These reports predict
wildfire potential based on a number of factors that influence wildfires
including climate and weather, human activity, fuel moisture, amount of fuel
available to burn, and so on. The 2009 Fire Season Outlook report for each
region is summarized here. You can also find a URL (web address) to view the
entire report. These reports can be used to identify general seasonal and
regional trends. However, fire potential can change quite rapidly. For
up-to-the-minute information, use the "7-day Potential" URL's for your area.
These summaries should be taken with a grain of salt - namely, the realization
that above-normal temperatures and drier-than-normal conditions can result in
temporary increases in wildfire risk no matter where you live.
ALASKA
Fire potential is predicted to be normal for most of May, then below normal for
June through August. Some areas in south-central AK have increased risk due to
the presence of hazardous fuels.

7 Day - http://fire.ak.blm.gov/content/weather/outlooks/Fire_Potential.html
EASTERN UNITED STATES
Wildfire potential in the eastern United States should be normal from May
through August. However, northern WI and southeast MN could see increased fire
activity due to drought.

7 Day - http://gacc.nifc.gov/eacc/predictive/outlooks/Fire_Potential.html
GREAT BASIN
The potential for wildfires will be normal across much of the Great Basin this
season, except NV, which should see decreases in total fires and acres burned.
Hazardous fuels due to bark beetle infestations are present in UT, ID, and
western WY; these areas could experience increased risk.

CALIFORNIA
In the north, wildfire risk is predicted to be above-normal due to a dry spring
and below-normal precipitation and snowpack. In addition, the onset of the fire
season is expected to be earlier than normal. In the south, the central coast
and inland central coast areas will have above-normal potential, especially for
large fires. Other areas of the state should see a normal fire season. Across
the state, drought is expected to intensify and expand in area.

7 Day (Southern) -

NORTHWEST
Risk of wildfire in the Northwest is expected to be normal this season, except
in north-central WA east of the Cascade Mountains where snowpacks are running
75% of normal and increasing fire risk is expected through August.
Season - see National Fire Potential Outlook below
7 Day - http://www.nwccweb.us/content/products/fwx/guidance/dl.pdf
ROCKY MOUNTAINS
The fire potential in the Rocky Mountain region is forecast to be normal
through August, due to normal or above-normal snowpack, early spring
precipitation, and forecast normal temperatures and precipitation through the
summer.

7 Day (Southern) -
http://gacc.nifc.gov/rmcc/predictive/outlook/Fire_Potential.pdf
SOUTHERN UNITED STATES
Most of the region will see normal weather and fire patterns. Exceptions are FL
and southern and western TX, where conditions are dry and are only expected to
worsen through the summer. Portions of TX affected by monsoon weather will see
conditions ease a bit as that weather pattern sets in. Recent fires in the
Appalachians and Carolinas occurred due to recent dry weather. The greening of
vegetation in these areas should help to decrease fires through the summer.
Season - see National Fire Potential Outlook below
7 Day - http://gacc.nifc.gov/sacc/predictive/outlooks/Fire_Potential.html
SOUTHWESTERN UNITED STATES
Current above-normal fire risks in the southeast part of the region will give
way to improved conditions as monsoon weather patterns arrive. Central and
southeast AZ and southwest NM will become hotter and drier with increased fire
risk; the arrival of monsoons will also mitigate conditions in these areas.
